Reflecting on the year ahead, old family photos, and a book store/bar I want to visit
Shana Tova, friends! Tonight, we’re celebrating with family and friends in Queens. My parents just got back from a road trip and are ambitious hosts so pulling together the meal took lots of team work and advance planning. My contribution is two fig challahs, which I made last night. There’s something therapeutic about working with dough after a busy day of running around and it’s a tradition I always look forward to, time consuming though it is. If you’ve never made bread, I recommend making challah. My family’s recipe is great and pretty foolproof. I even taught a challah cooking class during the pandemic–it was an ongoing zoom with breaks for rising. For other breads, Rebecca has a bunch of small batch recipes with super detailed instructions to start your bread journey. The focaccia in a loaf pan is an extremely satisfying project.
