Two years ago, I wrote about how I got my KitchenAid mixer, a hand me down from my childhood neighbor. I was very touched when she reached out to offer it to me, because like so many kitchen items, I had it in my registry bucket, earmarked as something I couldn’t acquire until marriage. Since writing that, I’ve attended a bunch more weddings and browsed registries. I’m not above walking around the new Crate and Barrel in Union Square and imaging myself with that little barcode gun. It’s the best kind of imaginary shopping spree. I believe registries are for everyone, and a great way to support your people (shoutout Fresh Starts Registry, you can read my interview with Olivia here). I’m still not married and I still love to cook so I wanted to share another exciting addition to my kitchen.
An Unmarried Woman & Her KitchenAid
Since I was very young, I’ve loved baking. I spent hours making cookies, challah, pumpkin bread, and Hamantaschen. I love the look of counter dusted with flour and I love tasting the dough and licking the spoon. In my childhood home, a lot of that baking involved a white KitchenAid stand mixer, which my great grandmother gifted my parents for their wedding. It’s lasted several decades now and is going strong. As a kid, I knew I wanted to have one in my own kitchen. In the back of my mind, I assumed I would have to wait until marriage.
