Hi friends,
Baking in a heatwave seems like a bad idea. Our window AC units are already working their hardest. But baking with sweet almost two year old Dina is a great idea, no matter the weather. I spent Sunday morning making blueberry scones with her and Leslie and it was worth the heat (and we picked a recipe that only baked for 15 minutes, a real life hack). I have great childhood memories of baking and cooking and it was really fun to create some with Dina (even if she doesn’t remember, I will). We all sat and ate scones together after and then she took a nap, lucky gal. I hope you’ve been staying cool enough and enjoying ice cream, late sunsets, and wearing not a lot of clothing and a lot of SPF. Summer’s just begun and good things await us. Also, New Yorkers, don’t forget to vote in the primary elections tomorrow.
On Thursday, I’m going to write about songs of the summer and how summer is political!
Now, let’s dive in.
Something to cook:
Tilden and I cooked dinner together and opted for a simple pasta to minimize oven time. We tossed spaghetti with sauteed broccoli rabe, calabrian chili garlic, basil, parsley, olives, and of course, parmesan cheese. It was delicious and bright and paired well with orange wine.
Dina, Leslie, and I made blueberry scones, which were very good and easy. Don’t skip the turbinado sugar at the end (you can grab a packet of sugar in the raw from the coffee shop), it’s a great extra crunch.
I’m still making lots of smoothies and frozen veggie burgers. Staples for a busy gal.
After baking, Leslie, Frida, Julie and I went to Wegman’s which was a real delight. I got baby potatoes, manchego, yellow cherry tomatoes, well priced beans and pasta, and more things I’m excited to cook with.
Something to order:
Mo’s General does regular BOGO pizza pies on Uber Eats (which means uber pays for the promo), which is an incredible deal. We got two cheese pies and froze the extra (thicker pizza freezes so well) and their excellent caesar salad.
On Wednesday, Julia, Julianne and I caught up and avoid hanger at Juliette. The space feels like a garden (but a temperature controlled one) and the menu is wide ranging: I got eggs on toast with artichokes, arugula, and ricotta and they also have burgers and salads. Fries for the table are a must.
Oset and I went to Jake Cornell’s Gorge night (the next on is 7/18, you should go) and grabbed dinner before at American Bar. It was my first time there and I liked the people watching, oysters, and peanut salad (you can get it without chicken).
We went to the Cyclones game on Friday which is the best day to go because they do fireworks after the game. They have tickets where you get two drinks and a ticket for $25 which is a great deal (there’s a promo code for it so sign up for their emails for details)
Dale and I got brunch at Mesa Coyoacan and I always love their huevos rancheros and there’s never a wait (related, this does not seem accurate).
I love going to a sports bar to watch the WNBA. Dale and I watched Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark at Keg & Lantern, where I had a Caesar wrap (the default was without chicken, we love to see it) and fries.

Random but I have to shout out Brightwood Skin on the Upper East Side. I got masseter botox there recently (have been doing since 2021 for TMJ and it’s been very effective) from a neuro PA who was so great and their pricing is reasonable. If you go, mention my name (Abigail Koffler) and get $50 off (they gifted me a facial but I paid for my Botox).
