I love a three day weekend. It feels like the correct amount of time to be able to catch up on sleep, see friends, and maybe run an errand or two. It’s a busy time of year, as I predicted during our long quiet January. I’ve been working on my taxes which are always complicated with freelance things and also sting more than usual knowing that our tax dollars are funding so much harm both at home and around the globe. We have a short week ahead and then we’re going to Philly this weekend, which always makes me happy.
Now, let’s dive in. On Thursday, paid subscribers will get a guide to my favorite recipes to cook with friends, plus some tips.
Something to cook:
Julia and I made another favorite recipe of ours on Monday:
pasta with chickpeas. We always add frozen or fresh spinach and it’s so comforting and cozy. Also I’m obsessed with Joey calling Malta a place with old school vibes.Amy and David were in town so we had a family brunch featuring bagels, pumpkin bread, and a frittata. The neighborhood looked so pretty in the snow.
Isa and I had a lovely evening together. She made this gochujang potato stew that was so hearty and delicious. It would make for great leftovers. We served it with salad and I made a jar of lemon vinaigrette (a great low stakes meal prep item).
I need to restock my Trader Joe’s scallion pancakes—they are the ultimate snack or building block for an egg burrito thing.
Something to order:
Julia, Hillary, Julianne and I gathered for an evening of snuggles and ordered from Wei’s. I’ve walked past it a bunch but had never been and it was good. Definitely get the wontons in peanut sauce (they reminded me of the ones from M.Shanghai, rip), the eggplant, and some noodles of your choice.
For Valentine’s Day, Dale and I went to Estancia 460 in Tribeca. It’s an Argentine restaurant that always brings back good memories (of both study abroad and the times we’ve gone there together). Start with corn empanadas, drink some Torrontes or Malbec and enjoy the meal. One of the owners opened a bar next door, North Bar, that’s a great place for a nitecap.
I ate a too small breakfast on Thursday and by 11, all I could think about was lunch. My choice was the right one: a potato breakfast burrito from Santa Fe (I called ahead to make sure they still had some). This New Mexico style burrito is loaded with potatoes, hatch green chili salsa, soft scrambled eggs, and cheese in a flour tortilla. It was a highlight of my week and I enjoyed every single bite.
Delaney celebrated her one year anniversary of living in New York with an incredible themed party. She served pizza, bagels, incredible latkes from Russ & Daughters, black and white cookies and more. Committing to a theme is always fun and obviously this city’s food speaks for itself.
Julia and I got a last minute breakfast at Claudia’s and a desayuno chapin always makes my day.
We caught up with Brandon, Alyssa, Erica, and Quentin at Mesa Coyoacan, always a favorite. I could eat their mushroom tacos multiple times a week.
