In a fitting yet unfortunate start for Gentle January, I got sick last week. I took a sick day, slept a lot, made my way through several seasons of Grey’s Anatomy (the first two are endlessly rewatchable to me) and did not much else. It’s frustrating to be sick, to sleep so much and wake up and still feel sick, to feel like everyday tasks take so much energy, to not be in the mood for real meals or going places. I look tired and I feel tired.
As I write this on Sunday, I finally have more energy, but still plan to take it easy. I just went on my first walk since Tuesday and found Yellowface in my local free library, a nice little reward from the universe for finally leaving the apartment.
If you’re inside for any reason, take a scroll through some of my favorite creators on Tiktok and IG and take care! I know a lot of people are sick right now, so stay home if you can and mask up if you have to leave. Rest and restore.
Now, let’s dive in.
Something to cook:
Before I was feeling sick, I was feeling restless (this often happens when I’m in denial that I’m feeling sick) so I made muffins after dinner, using this recipe from
’s Small Victories cookbook, but swapping the apples for mashed bananas and chocolate chips (I don’t like nuts in my muffins). We ate some and froze some and it’s very cozy to have muffins on hand.My parents dropped off groceries including english muffins so I’ve been making some easy egg sandwiches with cheddar and sriracha mayo and having them with blueberries and peanut butter
Other sick girl eats included crackers, clementines, hot chocolate, and mac and cheese.
Something to order:
On New Year’s Day, Julia, Dale and I went to the Commodore (my first time). The food was really good—we had excellent nachos, kale salad, biscuits with honey butter and they both got the medium chicken sandwich. I love when a bar overdelivers on food (and their self serve tap water was cold and infused with lemon, a nice touch)!
I’ve had some takeout miso soup and tom yum soup which were both restorative (from Ako and Sage respectively). Also bagels from Bagelsmith, always.
Dale shared his tater tots from Clara’s with me and they went perfectly with my breakfast for dinner egg sandwich.
When I emerged for my walk earlier today, I needed a destination and A&C Super was it. A flakey croissant is a mood booster.
Scarr’s finally reopened after a fire at a neighboring building and Dale brought home a pizza and their excellent vegan caesar salad. It felt like rejoining the world a bit to eat it.

So sorry that you’re ringing in the new year feeling sick! I totally agree that being sick and out of sorts just really throws me off.
