Hi friends,
It’s really the season to enjoy things. The days are the longest they’ll be all year and there’s so much to fill them with. You don’t need a jacket and the heat wave hasn’t started yet (as of this writing). I know it’s coming and it’s ridiculous to cut back library hours during a time where people need cool spaces more than usual (look out for your neighbors this week). I had a lovely summer weekend with both firm and loose plans, covering a lot of ground even though public transit was struggling, which is a systemic issue!
On Thursday, it’s time for our summer bucket list since it will be the summer solstice! I’m so ready.
Now let’s dive in.
Something to cook
Last week, I made Julia Turshen’s roasted cauliflower and cabbage tacos (from her cookbook Simply, Julia). I added black beans and made several meals of it (if you want to pack tacos for an office lunch, char the tortillas in the morning and bring them in foil). The avocado sauce with cilantro and lime is a highlight (I used my immersion blender, which I’m obsessed with).
I had dinner with my parents on Monday and they made a simple frittata with feta and kale (similar) and salad. We topped the frittata with Calabrian chilis and took a post dinner walk for ice cream.
I kept the taco theme going and made more breakfast tacos and cabbage and black bean tacos throughout the week. I love tacos 365 but they’re especially good in the summer.
I’m also still on a smoothie kick that will continue as it gets hotter. I had some strawberries that were close to mushy and cleaned and froze them for future smoothies. A good way to avoid food waste and a gift for your future self. Remember to salt your smoothies (Molly Baz taught me this).
Something to order:
Dale and I caught up after his trip at our favorite spot Lighthouse. I had their new seasonal pasta with roasted corn and tomatoes and a spritz.
Ivy and I celebrated Byline’s first birthday at Time Again. I can’t believe it’s only a year old, it’s one of my favorite things to read.
Tilden celebrated her belated birthday with pizza from Rocco’s (very good classic new York pies) and carrot cake from Clementine.
Lizzi came to town for the Las Culturistas Culture awards (incredible as always—Julia Fox and Mandy Moore were in attendance) and we got dinner at Lighthouse with Alex. We were there during happy hour for $1 oysters and $10 wine, split some labneh and hummus, and I got the tahini caesar. 10/10 as always.
On Sunday, I spent more time than I’d like to admit waiting for a bus that I found on a street it was not supposed to be driving on (did I mention public transit is a disaster during the summer?) but eventually made it to Crown Heights to hang with Leslie and Frida at their stoop sale. The bus ride gave me time to listen to Charli xcx’s new album. After the sale, Lillie, Frida and I went to Hart’s for an outdoor dinner. I hadn’t been there in years and everything was so good. We had all the summery things: zucchini doughnuts (like savory zeppele), ricotta with sungolds, snap peas with tahini and olive oil cake with strawberries and cream.
