Mission: Savor the Summer
After a draining first half of the year, we are here for a good time
July has been a very good month so far—we’ve finally had some sunshine, my family is celebrating good news and there’s an energy in the air throughout the city (this Zohran video really made me smile). I hope you’re getting your steps in and having fun! This season is always so fleeting and my mission after an intense first half of the year is to enjoy it.
One way to enjoy summer in the city is by going to the Cyclones Game with This Needs Hot Sauce! Join us on August 15th in Coney Island to watch the Cyclones, see fireworks, and enjoy ballpark food (I love their nachos). Buy your tickets via this link to be seated in our area and get a free hat and RSVP here! If you haven’t been to a game, you are in for a treat—it is so wholesome and fun and really feels like a mini vacation.
Now, let’s dive in.
Something to cook:
Making granola has become an every other sunday ritual and I love how flexible it is. This time I added walnuts, which were really good, alongside some chia seeds.
Bachelor in Paradise is back (I treasure a Monday show) and Julia and I are back to our tofu bowl tradition. I love that this silly show gives me built in friend time and something to look forward to on Monday nights.
I treated myself to a big bag of cherries and they are so good I had to get a cherry red pedicure to match. I’ve been eating them right out of the fridge and Tilden and I had them for dessert on Friday with some hand whipped cream—so chic and simple.
This is really not a recipe but I had some leftover mozzarella and a little bit of marinara and made a pizza toast with some sourdough I had in the freezer. I swirled a little pesto on top and it tasted like an elevated pizza bagel, very good. I put some chili crisp salad sprinkles on top, I love those things.
Before dessert, we made zucchini tostadas with jammy zucchini, crisped tortillas with melted jack cheese, refried black beans, lime crema, and a tomatillo salsa Tilden made. This recipe gave us the initial inspiration and then we riffed.
Something to order:
Angela and I wrapped up the week on her terrace with Depanneur sandwiches and lime & salt Ghia (client). Skyline views with cold beverages never get old!
Leah, Erika, Jessica and I got lunch at Baby Blues Luncheonette—it was my first time there and I really liked it. The wait is long and they close the waitlist regularly. Jessica put our names down (champ) and we got seated about an hour later. Leah and I split the halloumi lettuce and tomato sandwich and we shared greek potatoes (so good) and the baklava banana bread. They also make a lovely Arnold Palmer, which makes me think of Pop Pop whenever I order one.
I tried a new to me oyster spot in Greenpoint, Stowaway, and it was great. Their happy hour is $1.50 oysters and goes till 7, which is later than most! I have done my research in this area—add this one to your list.
Lissette and her fam hosted a park hang by the Brooklyn Bridge and it was so nice to catch up. We snacked on various chips (the Cape Cod salt and pepper chips are so good), fruit and then got coffee ice cream from Sugar Hill Creamery in Time Out Market. The ice cream trucks around Dumbo charge way too much so I was happy to switch it up
