I tried a new to me food this weekend: peace pies, a type of ice cream sandwich with a chocolate cookie, vanilla ice cream, brownie bits and salted caramel. It’s sold on the beach in Ventnor by a seller named Guy the Ice Cream Guy (perfect) and is so delicious (you can also order them online). I’m back in the city after a lovely weekend with Hillary’s family down the shore. I had my first spin at gambling and made a whopping $14, took long walks on the beach, swam in the ocean, and had linguine with clams.
Finding a date for plans in the summer seems to only get harder as I get older so I’m especially glad that we were all able to make this work in spite of everything else going on.
I hope you had a lovely weekend as well. The sunsets are getting earlier (big yikes for my mental health) but it’s still summer! Thursday’s newsletter is a slight topic shift—I’m writing about sunscreen, which is something I am very passionate about and has been getting some attention lately. I have so many thoughts.
Something to cook:
I had a cold earlier this week and stocked up on comfort foods/whatever I was in the mood for. This meant honey bunches of oats (I’m entering a cereal phase again), raspberries, and fancy shredded cheese from Tillamook (it’s thicker shreds than most brands) and makes for great quesadillas.
Pasta is always comfort food and I had some rigatoni aglio e olio with spinach for an easy dinner.
Down the shore, we got delicious sheeps milk cheeses from the Ventnor Farmer’s Market and made a cheese plate with their gouda and a bloomy soft cheese, plus fig jam, crackers, and grapes. It was super special to eat with friends on the patio with chilled white wine.
For dinner on Friday, Hillary’s parents had a barbecue complete with pasta salad, watermelon and feta salad, corn on the cob and all kinds of burgers. Hill and I made black bean burgers and they were a hit!
Something to order:
Most of my dining out was in Jersey so save this if you’re heading down the shore!
We got poke bowls delivered to the beach from Poke Bowl Tropical and they were so good. I got one with grilled tofu and sushi rice and all the toppings were fresh and well proportioned.
Brunch is the perfect pregame to a day at the beach and we had brunch at the Dorset one day (I got a caprese sandwich with fries for the Jersey tomatoes) and Isabella’s on Sunday (the huevos rancheros were really good).
On Saturday night, we had dinner at the Red Room Cafe, an Italian restaurant with housemade pasta (it’s very good, worth a reservation for sure). The linguine with clams was really good and the spicy version had long hots in it, which was really good. It’s BYO so we grabbed wine at Wahine, a wine shop from the same owners as Fishtown Social in Philly. After dinner, we headed to Atlantic City for live music at Deckstock and a brief visit to the casinos.
Once I got back to Brooklyn, Dale and I went to dinner at St. Anselm (we walked in and got seats at the bar). They’re known for their steak but have really good non steak options (Dale loves their fish option). We had their grilled romaine salad which is really good, the radishes with herbed butter and baguette, grilled flatbread with feta, and fingerling potatoes. It was so good and always feels so good to be home, filling each other in our weekends.
