Some rituals are sacred. In New York, getting a slice of pizza after an event is one of them. A good slice of pizza can be eaten while walking and no one will bat an eye. I love going to events and usually need a little something afterwards. Enter a slice of pizza. For $4 (or less or slightly more, inflation is wild) your problem is solved. I did this recently at the Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street and walked up sixth avenue to the L train. The sun was setting, there was good people watching and I didn’t even put my headphones in until I got to the train. New York is my home and after living here for over 25 years (I spent five years away for college and a fellowship), it still has the power to blow me away.
On Thursday, I’m writing about feeling like I’m always behind on my personal to-do list! It will be a bit of a vent and a bit of a pep talk. And the comments will be good.
Now, let’s dive in.
Something to cook:
Tilden and I caught up after way too long (we had back to back trips) and made one of our favorite dinners—squash toasts! I bought precut squash which is worth every penny and we had Clementine cupcakes for dessert, so good.
Dale and I went to a Canadian friendsgiving (Aris’ girlfriend Julia is Canadian, happy thanksgiving to my Canadian readers) and it was my first time celebrating. I brought chocolate chip cookies, because those are appropriate for all occasions. The food options were really great (someone brought this farro salad and they had batched cocktails and such a good cheese plate) and the company was even better.
I made dinner for myself for the first time in a minute and kept it simple and seasonal—I roasted delicata squash with some spices and served it over some ricotta, arugula and black beans with habanero salsa (leftover from Mesa Coyoacan takeout).
L’Isolina’s spaghetti dust is a major shortcut for aglio e olio with a kick. You add it to pasta with some olive oil and parm and you’ve got dinner (I added chickpeas and broccoli and the leftovers were great for lunch).
Something to order:
My post event pizza deserves a second mention. The Joe’s in Williamsburg is not the best Joe’s but the Carmine street one was very good. It’s cash only.
Our last meal in Burlington was also pizza based from Folino’s. The mushroom pie was the best one and we all really enjoyed the salads. The caesar salad came with a lemon wedge which was a very nice burst of acidity.
I came home to sushi delivery from Ako and new episodes of Love is Blind, an ideal post trip situation.
The Market Spice bowl from Cava is very good. I feel like no one orders the vegetarian combos so get it so they keep the spicy falafel on the menu!
We headed to Philly on Saturday to celebrate Aunt Lois’s 90th Birthday (iconic). We grabbed a little treat from Weinrich’s Bakery, which has been open for more than 100 years. The cookies were very good and there were tons of Eagles and Phillies specials, I love Philly sports culture.

Keith Lee is a TikTok food critic for the people
Lissette was wearing the best lip stain at the Bachelorette and it was Rare Beauty (I of course, love their blush). It definitely stands out from a typical celebrity brand and this feature explains why.
A Brooklyn coffee shop banned recording videos. TikTok can bring positive attention to places that deserve it but also can make places backdrops rather than functional. It’s complicated.
I’ve made Priya Krishna’s saag feta a few times (so good) and I’m excited to try her coconut saag (Isa, let’s make this together?)

Katalin Kariko won the Nobel Prize for her research that led to the MRNA vaccines and Penn, the school that sidelined her research and basically kicked her out, was posted tweets celebrating her. Not surprising coming from them but still shady! This 2021 profile of her by Mattie Kahn is excellent.
The benefits of downsizing. Every time I move I’m shocked by how much stuff can accumulate, even in a small space.
Take care this week! And thank you for being here.
