It Is a Truth Universally Acknowledged That Summer Movies Are Good
What are we watching and rewatching this summer?
Today’s newsletter is about something that brings me a lot of joy. A summer film. Around here, we believe joy is not meant to be a crumb (and we believe in hope, education, and action).
We landed in New York late on Saturday. We were early but our gate was not ready for us. I got back to my apartment on Sunday morning, after spending the night in Queens. Dale was running errands so I had the place to myself. I unpacked immediately (always a good idea if you can force yourself to), did some laundry, worked out, and got a bagel to eat in the park. I was home. Finally, in the middle of the afternoon, there was nothing left to do. I turned on the AC and I turned on the TV to watch Fire Island on Hulu, a gay romcom based on Pride and Prejudice (hence today’s subject line) and created by Joel Kim Booster with an all queer, mostly Asian cast. It instantly joined a rare canon of summer movies, ones that you would have watched at a sleepover (not as a kid I guess but a lot goes over a kid’s head, my sister’s 8th birthday party was Grease themed). I want to make time for movie nights this summer, embracing the respite from the heat or a summer storm and watching something I’ve seen so many times.
Here’s what’s on the watchlist:
