It’s August! The Eras tour part 1 is wrapping up (this moment! and this one!! really got me), my twenties are wrapping up, and I’m trying to take a mental beat to be present for it all. It’s a mixed bag, results wise but a worthy effort. A huge source of joy this past week was chatting with all of you in this thread. If you haven’t yet, come say hello and chat with this wonderful community!
This Thursday, we’re chatting about foods of summer. We’re deep in tomato season and the humidity has lifted. Hallelujah!
Now, let’s dive in.
Something to cook:
Julia and I cooked our traditional Monday tofu bowl with crispy tofu, rice, edamame, avocado, cabbage, peanut sauce, scallions, cilantro, and peanuts. It always hits the spot.
Tilden and I cooked a seasonal toast feast (we love these toasts when it’s a little cooler out). We made these ricotta toasts with melted-pepper jam (we put the ricotta under the toasts which makes more sense), a tomato cucumber salad with heirloom tomatoes and shaved parmesan. So good.
I used the leftovers to make tomato ricotta toast at the office. The office lunch possibilities expand if you are willing to carry a bunch of small containers (I brought the tomato, ricotta, and bread separately and it was worth it).
I made Paro’s dal to bring to the office with rice and veggies. It was great with some salsa macha (from SOMOS, client that makes the best salsa and chips)
Something to order:
Devinne and I caught up at Barn Joo in Union Square, which has been open forever. It was still really good and the location is super convenient. We split bibimbap and the Korean scallion pancake with kimchi.
I had a sisterly hang where I borrowed bathing suits from Leah (sisters borrowing each other’s clothes is a canon event) and we all had takeout from Hummus Market. The labneh and cauliflower were really good.
Alicia and I took a summer friday ice cream walk in McGolrick Park. The ice cream was obviously from Screen Door, my summer obsession.
Hillary and I grabbed dinner at Huertas ahead of its closing later this month. I’ll miss the tapas, especially the patatas bravas and mushrooms, and Spanish wine in the East Village.
Dale, Oset, and I hung with Erica & her fam in Fort Greene Park over bagels. Afterwards, we walked to Daigo for hand rolls (so good).
Rose and I went to Decades in Ridgewood, which was started by Ops alums. Their pizza is so good and the pies are larger and a little crisper than Ops. They also make a great Caesar salad and I had a lime watermelon NA soda.
Something to read:
I’m reading Mattie Kahn’s Young and Restless about the role of girls in America’s revolution and it’s so good so far. There are so many girls I wish I had learned about in history class.
What does gatekeeping even mean these days?
Metamorphosis by Hilary Duff was the first CD I ever owned. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years.
