Tomorrow is the start of Memorial Day weekend, which is the unofficial start of summer. I’m both excited and nervous for this season, which has historically been my favorite. I met my ex seven years ago in May and our first summer is filled with vivid memories that I know I’ll run into on many corners. Thank god a new Lorde album is coming to help me process it all.
I have a strong urge to create new memories and a practical need to create those memories on a budget. Where some summers are about travel, this one is about enjoying my rent, which went up quite a lot by virtue of no longer splitting it. I’m so grateful to have kept the apartment and now it’s time to enjoy it. I’m very into having people over to get ready for something, cooking dinner and then walking to get ice cream, and having meet and greets with Este, who’s very friendly.
Other places you will find me: the local park (reading a library book in the sun is free and glorious), my friend’s backyards (if you have one, please invite me, ditto with a pool), and walking all over the place. I’m also determined to go to more museums, which always have great air conditioning. I need to visit the newly reopened Frick, the Whitney, and I really want to see the Dandy exhibit at the Met (and go to the rooftop, which I love).
I’m writing this partially to reassure myself that I will have a good summer even though I am not going to Europe. Social media makes it looks like everyone is constantly in Italy and I have never been to Italy (I am going in summer 2026, though, is it too early to start the countdown)? I need to get back into deleting Instagram in the weekends and I need to relish my trip to Maine or Coney Island just as much as a transatlantic flight. At least there’s no jetlag.
Now, let’s get into our bucket list and some more personal break up talk! One other thing: I am planning a TNHS event for the summer. If you’re local to NYC and would come to an event, please vote below!
