Hi there,
I’m writing to you after a lovely day at the beach and my body is sun filled and sleepy. I’ve been waiting for this feeling all summer and it’s been elusive. We’ve had rain, air quality alerts, heat waves and I know more is coming. So when I ran into the ocean at Rockaway Beach, I was really happy to be there. I also had a Ripper’s Burger (another check on the bucket list) and even bought a t-shirt (Dale got one last summer and I’ve been jealous of it for the past year).
Now, let’s dive in. More to come on Thursday!
Something to cook:
Julia and I cooked dinner on Monday—crispy tofu with Bowlcut Char Siu BBQ sauce, rice, scallions, peanuts, avocado, and edamame. We topped with lots of chili crisp and furikake seasoning.
My “meal prep” was a pot of Smitten Kitchen’s green garlic spaghetti. I used salted butter which made a positive difference and did restorative yoga while I roasted the garlic, good for the mind and body.
Tilden and I made green sauce and served with bean and cheese pupusas, tostones, and a cucumber tomato salad with scallion and lime juice. So delicious.
On Saturday, I made simple pasta aglio e olio and roasted some broccoli with garlic. About ten minutes before the broccoli was done, I added some feta on top which got a little brown. Very good combination.
Something to order:
We celebrated Julia’s birthday with dinner at Bonnie’s. Going with a big group was great so we could try lots of stuff. My favorites were the naw mai fan (crispy rice with mushrooms), the funky cacio e pepe, and the long beans. The sundae is also a must to finish the meal.
Josh was in town so I showed him around Williamsburg a bit, which was so nice. We grabbed coffee and treats at Bakeri (their citrus olive oil cake was really good), hung out in Domino Park and then grabbed a spritz at Spuyten Duyvil.
Did you see the Barbie movie? I absolutely loved it and already have plans to see it again. We saw it on Friday at the Skyline Drive In (Julianne hooked it up) and the setting was gorgeous. We got to watch the pink sunset and you can bring food and drinks. Definitely get there early to get seats (I think the chairs are a better view than what the cars get). Everyone was dressed up—we spotted so many people in pink on the way and exchanged knowing glances.
Isa and Frida and I got brunch at the new Ursula in Bed-Stuy. It’s way bigger and even has a backyard. I got the chilaquiles and Frida got these very tasty blue corn pancakes that she shared.
At the beach, we obviously got Rippers—I love their veggie burger and the fries, which are so well seasoned and it was Leah’s first time. It’s worth the wait. On the drive back, we stopped at Screen Door for post beach ice cream, what could be better?
